4-3-16 ~ A View of the Field and Sky behind Highland Belle

Those of you that have know me for ever so long remember how I would stop at this field on my way to school to take photos of the hay bales and the fence day after day. My favorite tree is directly across the road from this. Well, our electric cooperative, BARC, bought the old school where my children went to school, where I taught, and where I walked the track for years while Budud would run and are putting up a solar field. Everything is different now. No lacrosse or soccer field for the children to use in the afternoons and our track is gone. Still, the field behind the building for now is beautiful, and it was such a pretty day I just had to stop, pause, and remember so many days from the past.

March 7, 2016 ~ The Pink Cadillac Diner

"Some people make the world special just by being in it."
~Anonymous

The Pink Cadillac Diner has been in Rockbridge County for years and years. It had changed hands a number of times, but a fellow teacher and her husband are running it now. On our way back from a race that Bud ran in in Roanoke on Saturday, we stopped off for apple pie and ice cream. It was SO good! I just had to pull out my camera. It looked too inviting to pass up.

Yes, that is Buddy. The old Cadillac has been there as long as the restaurant.

The fencing is the cutest in its pink and green.

The two top pictures are of the ice cream bar.
You know what the third photo is....yes, my plate of apple pie, ice cream, and caramel syrup.

Coca Cola memorabilia was located everywhere, but this little jukeboxes on top of the big vintage Coke machine really brought back memories. Have you ever been to eat where these were on the tables?

The Manure Movers of America sign hung between the restrooms. So funny!
I thought the "Please Wait to be Parked" was pretty clever. Sorry the picture is not real clear.
I think I am going to have to buy me one of the pink coffee cups. They are so cute.

March 6, 2016 ~ Tom's Barn Collective ~ BARN ALERT

"It is a happy talent to know how to play."
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

All of today's photos were taken with me hanging out the passenger window, iPhone gripped firmly in hand, and yelling..."Buddy, SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! YOU"RE GOING TOO FAST."

A single white barn I caught on Bud's side of car. This one was taken with me hanging over the dashboard trying to keep rear view mirror out of photo.
Another BARN ALERT barn with all of todaye photos taken with me hanging out the window with iPhone in hand and yelling..."Buddy, SLOW DAN...SLOW DOWN! Look at all that RED.

This horse trailer belongs to the barn above. I see a green John Deere something.

A New Barn Going Up
I have a hunch this could be a horse barn because this is an area of the county where lots of horse people live and there is even a special riding club out there. The Port-a-John adds such a lovely touch to this picture. I cannot help but giggle.

Close Up of the New Barn

I think these are their horses grazing.

March 3, 2016 ~ One Pretty House

"Life loves the liver of it."
~Maya Angelou

A Home in Buena Vista, Virginia

Every Monday I eat lunch with a friend of mine in what we call BV...a.k.a. Buena Vista. As I was leaving and driving through the residential section, I came across this house, fence, and gate in such beautiful condition. Nothing was out of place. It was so pretty. Then when I stopped to take the picture, I discovered all of the shadows in the street and on the tree and even some reflections of the trees in the upstairs windows. I would love to sell this big old house with all of its upkeep and move to a little place like this. I would be such a happy camper.

February 20, 2016 ~ The Old Farm at New Monmouth Presbyterian Church

~Ruth Asawa

This is a very old home about 7 miles from our house where two girls lived that I taught at least 25 years ago. At that time it had rockers on the front porch and was a happy place. It needed paint back then, but apparently a house can survive for years and years without a paint job. Now it is a bit lopsided and appears to be going downhill. No one has lived there in years, but the farm land and the barns are still in use with by the owners or someone renting it for their cattle and hay. Right now it is being used.

This is the home where two girls that I taught at least 25 years ago lived. At that time there were rocking chairs on the front porch and there were always children out in the yard. It has been vacated for years now, and as you can see is beginning to list a bit. It is interesting that there was no new paint on the house back then, and it is the same now. Someone that either own the property or rents it (that is my guess) is using the barns and grazing cattle. It is located across the road from New Monmouth Presbyterian Church.

This is not a very good picture, but it shows the outbuildings behind the house. Since I was on private property, I was using caution where I was stepping. There was a fence and I did not go over it...stand on it, yes, but not climb over it. The property is right on the Route 60 so anyone driving by knew exactly what I was doing.

This is the main barn.

And this is the other outbuilding behind the barn. The fence you see is the one I was balancing on to take the pictures. I was good...I didn’t do a face plant again.

This is New Monmouth Presbyterian Church which is across the street from the farm.

# 18 ~ Abandoned but Still Standing

“No matter what circumstances you leave it, home does not cease to be home.
No matter how you lived ~ well or poorly.”
~Joseph Brodsky

The Old House

A never used old tractor, a vintage truck, and a rusted horseshoe on the fence post.

The Outbuilding/Garage  ~ Note NO TRESPASSING SIGN

The Horseshoe and Front Porch in 2013
It doesn’t look like much has changed in 2 1/2  years.

This is an old homeplace about a mile from our house. The property is still in the family and no one is allowed behind the fence and the No Trespassing sign. Back in 2013, they were still using the house to store the hay bales for their cows, but yesterday there appeared to be nothing inside though the old swing is still hanging there on the front porch.

The last picture was taken back on November 11, 2013, with my iPhone 4S.

#8 ~ Cow Alert!

"The difference between a jogger and a runner is an entry blank.”
~George Sheehan

As usual, Buddy was out running this morning. After a while he came in laughing showing me this picture and commenting...”I can’t even run fast enough to pass a cow on the road.” It was so funny I just had to use his picture for my daily post. We have lots of cows getting out on the road. When we see one, that means stopping and calling the owners if we know them. If not we just have to pray it/they do not hit a car. We have a friend who hit one, and it was not a pretty sight...the car or the cow. This little house and the grazing field along side of it are just down the road from us a wee bit, so luckily this time we knew the owner of the naughty cow.

Tomorrow he has his first off road race near Roanoke, VA. It is called the "Frozen Toe" race. If it is nice weather and my back is OK, I am going to go with him. A lot of my school teacher friends run in this race, and it is always fun to get to chat with them for a bit. After that, I want him to take me to the House and Garden Show at the Salem Civic Center and out to lunch at the Chinese restaurant.

Barn on White Rock Road ~ Rockbridge County, VA

Old Barn on a Rainy Day

“Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby."
~Langston Hughes

This is a working farm with other outbuildings, and it is in our neck of the woods. It could use a couple of coats of paint on the roof and sides, but the old rustic wood still looks wonderful to me. The white spots are rain droplets as it was a dark, rainy day.

Tom, over at the Barn Collective, sponsors a meme devoted to the beauty of barns new and old. If you would like to see more of them here is the link: http://backroadstraveller.blogspot.com

My Husband the iPhone Photographer

This is Buddy nursing wicked blisters mid-marathon.
This is a Genie shot :-)

All of these pictures Buddy took on his runs in our rural “neighborhood”. He’s never made the change over to blogging from Facebook, so I thought I would share with all of you some of my recent favorites. I really like his capture of our Bridge to Somewhere with the fallen leaves. My son came over and put the three boards going down the center so I could walk out to the mailbox. The boards had spread so much over the 35 years I was afraid to cross it on foot. I still take my cane just in case I lose my balance for some reason.

The road in front of the house.

And last but not least...some shots of the beauty of Nature in our neck of the woods.

I am SO proud of him and all the beauty he can capture with his trusty iPhone 6.

Fence~Bench~Bike

Bud and I visit the track at my old school on a daily basis. This is one of the benches where students and walkers/runners rest from time to time. It is where Buddy usually parks his bike. He rides the 7 miles down to the track and back to the house, and I drive the car.
He’s the gutsy one. I’m the old wimp.

I walk a mile or two, and then I rest :-) It was windy and cold this afternoon. Bud ran in shorts, and I am bundled up as I always am.

Some Fences from Waynesboro in BLack and White

Thought the listing angle of this one was interesting.

But, on this side, it looked more to be falling over.

This is the vintage iron fencing in front of the BandB I posted for Signs2 yesterday.

I included the ornate iron grate over the front door of the Band B.
To me it is fencing meant to keep out the unwanted.

I posted this sign, too, but I wanted to show you the old vintage home with the protective fencing around the front porch. It keep the babies from falling off and adults' sipping g;asses :-)
