Fall Is Knocking at the Homeplace Door

Our Bridge to Somewhere is still standing...35 years.
There is almost no water in the creek right now.

It is almost time to start using our fire pit down by the creek.
We all bundle up with quilts on us and sit out there at night for hours.

And this is the greatest time of the year temperature wise to sit on the front porch.
Chicken and Bunny with his Apple computer are ready.
Note the carrot on the computer top.

Our tomatoes are heirlooms this year and the yummiest ever.
We ate this one tonight with din-din.
Such a variety of color.

A few more days are needed for this one,
but all of the greenery was so pretty
I just had to take a photo of it.

“Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees.

Fall Reflections in Hot Tub Turned Goldfish Pond

It won't be long before the fish will go to the bottom for the winter. The surprising part is many will survive and return to the top in the spring.

I'm glad you see only the underside of the gutter and not the part already filled with leaves. This one was a Magic Hour capture.

Fall is Here and There's a Chill in the Air

Today Buddy mowed leaves...not grass.

I think I see the reflection of my house.
My birdbath is made from a $1.00 glass lightbulb cover from Goodwill.

The leaves are starting to float and then sink.

This is how I feel some days... a bit off of plum.

Not a very appetizing place to sit at the moment...needs to be cleaned off.

My favorite seat....at least 20 years old.

When the leaves start falling, it is definitely lap quilt time.
These are two I made this summer...all cotton and very cozy.

The Calm before the Storm ~ "Sandy" ~ 10-28-12

This is looking down from right in front of the house. All looks so calm but very dreary because of the gray sky. The water is trickling along, but the creek is really very low. Once the rains hit us, the water will be well above the apple tree, and we will once again lose some more of our bank and our front yard.

The hoo-doos are standing, but I am afraid it won't be for long. Once Sandy's rains and winds  reach us, it will be another story. Lots and lots of leaves, but very little color is left.

Here is a close up of some of the hoo-doos. Gene and his friend, John, are the kings of hoo-doo building as well as sand castle building. How they balance those rocks on one another I do not know. Now, Eloise is becoming a very fine 7 year old builder. From now on work on them will require high water boots. The water is already getting to be a wee bit cold.

This one will be demolished for sure. These cool ones never survive a rushing creek.

This is the mess left from the our big wind storm in June.
A friend of ours who still burns wood in a wood stove for heat came and cut up the major part of the tree which had fallen across the creek, but he left the smaller branches on the bank for us.

Finally, here is what is left of the tree.
One whole side is gone.
I am wondering if it will be able to stay standing
if we get 30 mph winds and torrential rains.
We shall see. Stay tuned.

Now, I am off to the store to stock up on ice and the other necessities.
Hope I haven't waited too long.

Peek-a-Boo Fall Sky ~ SOOC ~ DP 10-25-12

There is nothing prettier than fall colored leaves against a backdrop of a beautiful blue sky, but today I am befuddled by one thing. How did I end up with such a different tint to the blue on the right when I did not adjust or edit this picture in any manner? It is SOOC.  There is so much I do not understand about how cameras work and there is so much I need to learn.

It's Harvest Time at McDonalds ~ Daily Photo 10-24-12

This little sign was hanging in the McDonalds near the Greenbriar in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. It was one impressive MickeyD's, but I guess it had to be so near to the Greenbriar Resort.

Daily Photo 10-20-12 ~ Leaves for Leontein

As I worked with these pictures I thought of Leontine, my sister, my niece, our school secretary's daughter, and all of my friends who have fought and are fighting the good fight. There is no family that has not been touched by this disease in some way. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of them. Please take your pictures of leaves and add them to our gift to Leontine, a lovely blogging friend of Nancy and so many others. Visit Nancy's blog, A Rural Journal,  to read more about our gifts of fall's leaves.

Turk Mt. ~ Shenandoah National Park ~VA ~ Skywatch Friday

The Turk Mountain trail is located in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. It's only 2.2 miles long, but the hike seems lots longer due to the 2,400 feet you have to climb to reach the top. Part of it is on the Appalachian Trail and then you split off onto what is the Turk Mountain Trail. The views are spectacular.
This picture was taken 2 weeks ago back when my computer was on the blink, so the trees look totally different now. Still, this was an especially gorgeous view.

Maple Tree Leaves about Gone ~ Daily Photo ~ 10-2-12

I took this picture as I was leaving for school this morning.  In just a week, my big old maple is about out of leaves because they are all here on the ground thanks to the wind and the rains. They are so colorful and pretty. It was so damp and chilly last night, I actually turned up the gas heaters for a bit. Boy, did that warmth feel good.

Creativity Gone Wrong ~ Daily Photo 9-30-12

This morning I walked up on North Mountain to check out the view of the valley. On the way back to the car, I spotted this creation. Did they not get the message.....DO NOT LITTER....Granted it was a bit creative, but in my mind it was creativity totally gone wrong.
