5-23-16 ~ Our World Tuesday ~ Hartbarger Fire

A week ago after I got home from town, it wasn't long before I heard one siren after the other. At first I just thought it was another truck wreck up on the Interstate, but there were way too many trucks zooming by the house with their noise makers going like crazy. I walked out our driveway, and the first thing I saw was lots of fire trucks and vehicles all up and down the highway. Our house is on the left behind and just past the 2 vehicles and the truck. As I walked across the street, I saw all of these other trucks and knew it was the Hartbarger homeplace. For years, I used to walk up and down the road with them, but they are all gone now, and a grandson of one of the sisters lives in the house. All of these shots are SOC...both my iPhone and my hiker Canon. Let me tell you that no one was hurt. I did not go across the road to gawk, but rather to be of any help I could be to the family. The very elderly remaining sister with Alzheimer's got out as well as the others, and she has been taken to family in MD, while the rest are living in the old green Stonewall Service Station off to the right that I have posted in the past...remember this:

 The grandson says he is going to fix the burnt out house, but I do not see how that is even possible. The fire department called it a total loss.

 There were three tankers and they were pumping from the creek in front of our house in 3 different places. They also put up what looked like a BIG square red swimming pool in the road where the hose is. I think maybe that is what you are seeing on the blacktop  before it was inflated.
I took the following pictures as the fellows were fighting the huge fire. They were so young, and it was so frightening to me seeing them put their lives on the line like that. So many of the volunteer firefighters in this area I taught which makes it very personal. The smoke was so severe at one point I started gagging. Never have I seen anything like this.

There were a lot of flames forming from this first floor read window.

 Even a volunteer firefighter needs a bit of water at times like these.

 Here the discussion begins about going into the house.

 Here they are gearing up to go in.
The fire appeared to be out in the front but was still raging in the back.

The Goshen,VA, volunteer chief is giving them their final instructions.

 Here is the first one gong in. I became so upset I had to turn and walk to the other side of the house. I overheard one of them say his foot had gone through the floor but was OK. I could not look so I do not know if the others went in or not. I kept wondering about the oxygen. I thought it was inflammable, but the tanks were on their backs, black face covers pulled down, then their breathing gear on their faces, and their helmets. This one man had what I thought to be some sort of a long axe.

When I got to this side, I saw the fire blazning on both floors.
It was like it was never going to end.

These last two pictures Buddy took when he went out to run the next morning.

Before I close out this post, I just want to say how professional and committed these young men were under such frightening circumstances.  Our volunteer fire departments can mean life or death to us  who live way out in the country where there are no fire hydrants. We the homeowners  MUST be on our toes about protecting our homes from fires like this. Ours is 100+ years old, and I feel sure it would be gone before the trucks ever got here. The Hartbatger home was not as old. All we have is the creek that runs in front of the house - and most of the time it carries little water - and to compound things you have to cross our "Bridge to Somewhere" to get to the house. It would not hold tankers, and I question if it would support the firetrucks. I have always been afraid of fire. My daddy was a safety engineer with the Corps. of Engineers, so I grew up in a house that had SAFTY FIRST written all over it. I never leave the place without double checking that all lights, fans, window AC's, the dryer, the coffee pot, my heating pad....you name it and I double check to be sure it is turned off. Still, we could be hit with an electrical fire in a split second. We sit almost flat on the ground with no basement so have all kinds of varmints under there chewing away on whatever they can find to put against their teeth. We just have to be careful, review our our escape plans, and pray our guardian angel is looking after us. We also continually put out our No Kill traps trying to catch the pesky and noisy visitors. When Buddy gets one, he drives it up on the mountain and drops off his little friend to start a new life far away from us. We all need to give thanks for the blessings we have received. It is called Gratitude.I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like to be in this situation.

5-9-16 ~ Bubbling Springs

Buddy and I went out to Bubbling Springs last Sunday. It is one of our spots in the county to visit.. You can walk in the water, cook on the grills, and  pick the watercress to bring home for sandwiches. I have included a 22 second video showing the springs bubbling if you would like to look at it. You can see the movement of the water and the sounds that it makes.

We passed this old barn that we have been watching for years now. Don’t know how much longer it is going to last. It is full of junk.  If it falls down, I would love to have some of the old wood.

 In this area where Bud is, the underground springs really bubble.

The water is SO cool. I remembered my creek shoes :-=)

 My feet  at 77 still have a lot of little girl left in them.

 This area is gorgeous with all the little pebbles and the bubbles.

February 22, 2016 ~ Snider Farm For Sale

My eldest son - now 50 - grew up spending lots of time in this homeplace with one of his best friend who later went into the Coast Guard. It is the prettiest old home, but it was way too big for Mom and Dad once the children were gone. A number of years back they built a smaller one story home on some of their land. Today I thought I would drive up their road on my way from the grocery store, but was saddened to see the For Sale sign in the front yard. I know as we gown older things change, but there is something so secure about them remaining the way we have known them through the years. I stopped in the driveway and went all around taking pictures because I want to send them to my son. So this is My World on Tuesday for this week. A world that is changing and moving forward. It was a very cloudy and overcast day, but for some reason it was conducive to taking pictures with my iPhone.

The Snider Homeplace

The Old Chimney on Side of Home
I love the curved top on it and the old, old brick.

Barn to the Side of the Home

Small Outbuilding beside Home

 This looks like a real treasure of their old farm machinery, but I have no idea what it is. Shaver makes me think of lumber and I do see shavings around it. I am sure they have timber on their land.

Another Barn Located in the Side Field to the Right

The Mountain View from the Side Field

 This field is right behind the home and abuts the property where they have built their new home. Whatever this structure was, it is gone now.

 This is their new home. I just pulled off the side of the road and took this picture out my window. The land with the old homeplace is located in the opposite direction from the sign and around the curve on the left. Mrs. Snider and I taught school together, and in addition to farming Mr. Snider was on the Board of Supervisors for our Kerrs Creek District of Rockbridge County.

February 15, 2016 ~ My 77th and Big Snow #2

In past years, Eloise’s family, a friend of ours, and Bud and I have gone out to Dothan State Park and rented a big cabin for my birthday weekend. Well, this year for #77, we decided to stay here at the Homeplace, and what a fine decision that was considering the frigid weather we had. It was way too cold and windy to do any hiking or anything else outside. Here are some the posters Eloise has made for me thru the years. You can tell the first was quite a while ago. Also, she has changed my name several time... from Baga, to Lady Baga, to Bags. The Lady Baga is the one that really cracks me up.

The girls created the table. Eloise made the napkin holders from toilet paper rollers I cut into sections several years back painting them and then giving them a good dose of Modge Podge, and, and she made the name place “creations” from foam pieces you can get at Wally World. Take note of the HOT sauce. Both of my sons cannot eat anything with HOT sauce...and Mom cannot even take spices that are the least bit warm.

 As all of you know, I am not afraid to poke fun at myself .
I thought this was a pretty funny one.

 The girls are sketching and watching/listening to the TV.

 Those poor girls. A love three day weekend,
 and then there comes the homework. UGH!

 Finally, we have the fearsome threesome in our hats.
This has to be my favorite picture of the weekend even if I did not clean it up in Photoshop. Other than cropping, it is truly SOC!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then the snow started, and there was a mad departure for Richmond a day early. Going over the mountain at Afton, VA, is not something anyone in their right mind wants to do in snow, sleet, ice, or high winds. They made it back uneventfully, thank goodness.Here are the pictures I tool today after it snowing all night and day, We got 9 inches and now it i all crunchy and icy.
I only left the house long enough to get these photos.
It was way too cold and snowy to be outside for more than five minutes.
The barn and outbuilding are still standing.
Each time we get a heavy snow, I fear a roof falling in.
These tracks are from Buddy with his two sticks
hobbling across to get up hill to his car.
He had to go to work today... before they scraped the road.
This is when the creek looks the prettiest.
It’s a shame it’s too cold to sit down there and enjoy it.
#27 ~ Jack in His Maze and Other Snow Scenes
Our World Tuesday at Home
Just a little while ago I walked into the living room, and this poor baby is what I found.
What in the world happened to it?
Maybe it hit the door and then Jack messed with it outside. and brought inside.
The cat does not ever go out.
I tried to get a picture of the yellow on the head so it would help you all to identify it for me.
This always makes me so sad...but NEVER, has one been brought into the house...
that is saved for the mice that the cat catches at night in the lower cabinets.
Yes....We live in a very OLD farmhouse, and you cannot kill all the mice.
 My Favorite Tree in the Snow
 Hay Bales on the Way Home
Whenever we have a large snow, we build Jack a little maze.
I pretend is the one at Hampton Court.
I have never seen a little dog have such a good time...and his Mommy.
 Oops...Buddy, You dead ended me into a big tree. You need to be more careful.
I could get hurt.
Get out here, please, and fix it for me. This is my peeing tree, duffus.
 The VA Dep’t of Transportation's big gravel pile.
 You can see that they have been moving up and down.
This is our front yard off to the left f the house. I thought the shadows were so cool.
The big field in front of the house with its shadows.
