Experimentation with Texture and Adjustments

 For a long time, I have been wanting to learn how to shoot still life photos against a white background. Yesterday I finally found an old and heavy wooden box with oval openings on the sides for gripping at our local “antique” mall ($8.00). From there I went straight to Wally World, picked up a can of white paint for $3.00,  two 50 cent foam brushes, drove home, and gave the box a single coat. Now the fun has begins.

Our prompt from Kim this week was “DREAM.” Well, it has been my dream for ages to learn how to use textures to enhance my pictures. I have taken two of Kim’s classes, have her recipe book, subscribed to her kitchen, but I am still struggling with the technique. For this shot I used her “frosted” texture in conjunction with the CoffeeShop Vintage Frame.

Milkin’ Time on the Farm

This is my world now. Growing up a block from the Atlantic Ocean in south Florida, I found the mountains of Virginia and the farming way of life to be very foreign to me when I moved here 33 years ago. Since then I have grown to love it. We live in a very rural county with residents depending heavily upon what I call "the cattle industry,” and we still have many of the wonderful old dairy farms though quite a few have disappeared. It is a gorgeous part of the country in which to live and rear your family. It is “My World Now.”

Weekend in Black and White ~ 4-29-11

Our Front Field at Sundown

-just shy of an acre

-very rocky and uneven

its uses:

-the location of our septic system

-a “victory garden” when our the children were still at home

 (fyi...the only way to water it -use a gas pump & pump water to it from the creek)

- a 3-family “victory garden” for 2 years

-a parking lot when we had old time music gatherings

-a place to put the volleyball net for fearsome competitions

-a walking field for me, but only out around the perimeter

-a hay field for a neighbor to use yielding about six bales and two cuttings

-a tomato garden behind the tree on the right, sometimes

-a fabulous spot to fly kites
-a job for a friend - we now pay him to keep it mowed...it take a heavy duty mower

-a favorite spot for the deer to run about

A Father and His Daughter

There is something I adore about looking at my son walking hand in hand with his six year old daughter or carrying her piggy-back. I like shooting them from behind, because that way neither one is posing for the picture. Saturday morning, before Eloise’s birthday party that afternoon, we all went over to her school to see the individual classroom victory gardens they had built. It was quite windy and chilly and E. was freezing. Don’t you know it would just have to turn cold, windy, and rainy on the day of her big party. While we were walking around the schoolyard, I grabbed this shot.
