Hodge Podge of Skies

Buddy and one of my good teacher pals before the Frosted Toe Run.
The sky really was that blue.

Bright blue and clouds mixed
with a bit of leftover snow thrown in for good measure.

I found this to be a gentle mix of color.

Our view of Roanoke, VA, from up on Mill Mt.

The gray clouds are moving in.

Another sunrise out here on the creek.
The cows are already eating their breakfasts.
What a life!

Come join in on this great meme.

Crimp Haven Alpacas ~ Daily Photo ~ 9-26-12

Sunrise down the road about two miles from the house. It was early yesterday morning on my way to school, but for some reason the alpacas were not out. Our road is just one little farm after another...some with cows, one with alpacas,  and others where the farmers rent the fields for growing hay for their animals in another location. Our world is definitely one of lots of little farms of one kind or another. Here is some interesting information about alpacas from the Crimp Haven Farm site ~ http://crimphaven.info

Perfect for a family farm, alpacas are gentle and easy to handle. They are safe even for younger children to work with, as they do not bite or butt. This is a venture that the whole family can work together on.
It is our vision that alpacas can become a vital part of the American economy. Well suited to the land and environment here they are also environmentally friendly, protecting the land that we love.
  • Alpacas have soft padded feet. This leaves pasture undamaged, and usable for years.
  • They have no top front teeth, so they are gentle grazers.
  • The alpaca does not usually eat or destroy trees.
  • The average alpaca only eats four pounds of food a day.
  • Although they need a regular fresh water supply, alpacas do not require abundant amounts of water.
  • The herd tends to deposit their manure in one or two spots in the pasture, making clean up easier.
  • Alpaca manure is a fantastic fertilizer.
  • One good acre of pasture can support up to ten alpacas.
  • Alpacas require minimal fencing, as they do not challenge it.
  • However, be careful to have enough fencing to keep them safe from predators (we use post and no climb wire fencing about 5 feet high).
  • They can produce four to ten pounds of fleece a year.
  • Their fleece produces 87 to 95 percent clean fiber compared to sheep’s wool.
  • People who are allergic to wool are generally not allergic to alpaca fiber.

Dawn Breaking on the Creek

I think there may be some hope for me. T’is hard to believe, but I think I’ve FINALLY gotten this straight...the white line across the sky is not a “jet stream” but rather a “contrail.” For some reason I had it in my head that when a “jet” flew overhead, the trail it left behind was a jet stream. Am sorry about that. As my mother used to always say: "It is hard to teach an old dog a new trick.”Her other favorite expression and belief was “That Sputnik is the cause of all of these awful Florida hurricanes and weird weather patterns." It has turned out to be a gorgeous day, and Buddy is OFF work for the 23rd and 24th for the first time in 33 years. That is a fabulous early Christmas present. We are off hiking tomorrow...goodie, goodie. Maybe I will get to see the red barn over by Seneca Falls in West Virginia.

Skywatch Friday ~ 12-16-11

Heavy Frost and a Morning Sunrise at
the Sensabaugh Farm
That’s the moon up there refusing to go away.

An empty highway this morning but a sky filled with glorious color. The blue did chang a bit from the first shot until now.

And then along came the birds...what a thrill to catch them on camera. It was a first for me. I am usually too slow on the draw, and they are long done before I can click the shutter. Thank goodness the interstate was free of any other cars. Another nice early Christmas present from Mother Nature.

Sunrise at Big Spring

When I used to walk out the door of my old country middle school, Highland Belle, this is the lake I would see. It is known as Big Spring. Now, that Highland Belle is the Central Office for the Rockbridge County School System, I get to see it at sunrise as I am picking up the mail to drive it to work with me. Last week I had the special treat of being there just as the foggy haze was beginning to lift from over the lake. These are SOOC.

Same Spot ~ Another Day ~ A Different Sunrise

Just before I turn onto the I-64 for my long drive to work, there is an area where the road crew keeps the gravel for snowy roads. It is an easy pull-off for me and the perfect spot to photograph the hale bales with the mountains in the background. My old school is directly behind this spot.

Sunrise at the Beach

I have decided to follow Claudia’s lead over at “Through a Lens Daily” and begin posting a picture each day.  It’s been a desire of mine to do something like this for a long time, but I simply lacked the nerve and the self confidence to do it.  Thank you, Claudia, for coming up with the concept. Reading your blog has convinced me I can really do this...one picture, one day at a time.

Here is a sunrise I experienced near Virginia Beach, VA, when our family was all together for a wonderful reunion just a few weeks ago.  I was the only one who would get up very early each morning to see the sunrises, and this one was my favorite. It was taken on the automatic setting using the EFS 18-55mm lens. The only modification I made was a small crop.
