Sunday Bridges ~ 1-30-11 ~ The Bridge to Somewhere
"The Bridge to Somewhere" through a Fish Eye Lens
This one if for you my friend, Mr. Louis La Vache. I promised you some fisheyes so here they are. As you know, I have shown this bridge at other times of the year, but this is the first time for 2011, and it’s the first try with the fish eye. My lens is a refurbished bottom of the line one - the good ones are way our of my price range - so it allows me to do a little with depth of field and aperture value, but it is still really difficult for me. I cannot tell you how many shots I took before finally choosing these...thank goodness for the digital cameras. The moral of this post is: “If you don’t succeed, Genie, try, try again.”
This view if from the front yard looking out across the bridge towards Route 60 west and West Virginia.
This is taken form the house side of the bridge looking east with Kerrs Creek running under it. This creek cuts through our property and is one of the reasons we bought the old farm 32 years ago.
Here you see the creek looking west from the bridge. I did not dare go out onto the it to shoot this or any of the pictures because it was icy, snowy, and very slick. The way the boards have separated through the years is scary enough on a good day so there was no way I was going to step out on that thing even for Mr Louis La Vache.
This is a bit more panoramic view of the bridge and the area across the highway...which used to be the main road to WV until Interstate 64 was built. The loggers used our road for years as well as all the folk who worked across the mountain at the paper mill, so once I-64 was completed we finally were able to live in a quiet and not heavily traveled highway.
My last shot is taken from the edge of “The Bridge to Somewhere” looking towards the magical “Somewhere"....our 112 year old frame farmhouse. The little rise in the left front of the picture is the rise to start over the rickety bridge.

Weekend in Black and White ~ 1-28-11
We have so many birds right now at the housewe can hardly keep the feeders full. They are coming with colorations running the gamete from whites to reds, yellows, blues, and grays. It is wonderful just sitting and watching them dance their magical dances as they fly through the air, prance across the ground and porch, and light with absolute precision on the feeders. I need to get a good book and start learning the names of each of them. At 71, I’m finding that each day is an exciting learning experience in the wonderful course called “Nature 101.”

A Walk in Our Woods
Not much snow fell, but there were lots of heavenly views for the camera lover. This shot was taken yeterday while walking the property line above our house during the afternoon.

Daily Photo ~ 1-27-11
We didn’t get much snow this go around, but that we did get was absolutely gorgeous on the branches of the trees in our front yard. This one is right outside our living room bay window and presents a lovely contrast between the white of the snow and the remaining color in the leaves. Sometimes less is more, and in this case I think the old saying rang very true.
Daily Photo Snow Update ~ 1-26-11
4:00 PM ~ Parts of Rockbridge County have received 4-5 inches, but we certainly haven’t and I’m so disappointed. The one good thing is if some areas got that much snow, we will have another “snow day” tomorrow from school. That means more time to play with the camera.

Watery Wednesday ~ 1-26-11
This is the creek close just below where it runs through our front yard. The ice is almost gone, but the forecast for tonight and tomorrow is for 4-6 inches mixture of sleet, ice and snow. We shall see shortly.

The Beginner with PSE9
More Experimentation ~ 3
More Experimentation ~ 3
My husband and I are taking a class TOGETHER in an attempt to learn how to use PSE9. There are 3 of us in the class, and we are all having the best time. Of course, since we are the two with Apples we only complicate things. Tonight our lesson was to learn how to select portions of photos, move them into a new background, and then manipulate their sizes and colors within that background. This is the beautiful lake up at the Peaks of Otter taken last week with the addition of the hand rising from the ice and the bathing suit gal flying above the tree...a bit silly but lots of fun to create!
