My Shadow and Me

Eloise Staying Cool in the Kitchen
I can remember as a child loving to stand
in front of the fan watching my skirt dance
in the wind.

"What dreadful hot weather we have!
It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance.”
~Jane Austen

  1. Eloise is so sweet -- I remember doing that too (and that's a looooong time ago)! Love the Jane Austen quote.

  2. Loving the fan picture. She's adorable. My overheads are a lifesaver in the heat.

  3. Brings back memories of when I was a child. We didn't have a color television until many years later. Air conditioning was unheard of too.

    Wonderful post!

  5. I use to do that in front of my grandmother's fan and her floor furnace too. But I wasn't wearing a skirt. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  15. The Jane Austen quote is perfect - such a ladylike way of complaining! Eloise has certainly found the best place to be in hot weather. Lovely photo.

  19. This is a wonderful view - it goes back a long way to the times when home A/C was unheard of and keeping cool was a quest (probably in VA more so than in New England). A fan is a portable cooling solution that Eloise has found, She is a beauty and I like both the photo and kitchen tile being black and white - it adds a retro look to a child searching for cool - and that was true in any era! Nice!

  23. Eloise is very photogenic - great picture. I can remember doing this at a young age too - then Mum would take us all to the lake for an early evening dip, put on our PJ's, and we went right to bed when we got home - all cooled off n tired :)

  26. Lorelei had a little handheld fan that she uses on herself...I guess all kids love them. I know I did...and I love that picture of Eloise.

  27. ...and I still like to be in front of the fan on a hot sultry afternoon. Tho, fashions have changed a lot in the last 50 years or so, no more dresses....but oh how your shadow and thoughts of childhood captures that special something in me. Great photo and memory.

  30. Wow, I should dig out a very similar photo taken of me at the same approximate age. It looks so similar, except there is not microwave in the background!! I was born WAY before they came along.

  31. Lovely memories. This photo reminds me that I should turn on the fan in my office then I wouldn't feel quite so warm. :))

  33. Like many other comments, this brings back childhood memories of standing in front of fans and water cooling units, long before central air.
