4-6-16 ~ Update on Oscar the Baby Squirrel

Last night Buddy and I drove Little Oscar over the mountain to the the loveliest lady in Covington, VA. She has been a rescue volunteer for 16 years. The minute she looked at Oscar she said..."On, dear, half his tail is gone, but he appears to be in good shape." This has Bud concerned because he has always thought that squirrels used their tails for balance. That dog-gone Jack. Could he have eaten the tail or just bitten it off? I surely hope it is the latter.  The volunteer brought a sock filled with rice she has heated in the microwave to keep him warm, and said she was taking him home immediately and giving him an IV feeding. Poor little thing. I feel so badly for him...and I will never look at a squirrel the same ever again. I feel like we have lost a part of the family. Poor Eloise...she wanted us to keep him for a pet. Don't think so. Oh...the other two babies have never appeared. I have looked all over the yard, so maybe he was the only one that fell from the nest.

I just went out to look again for the babies, and this tail was on the ground just past the  first step to our front porch.  You can see where it was severed. I am wondering if this could have been the mother...and it is interesting that it was right at the front steps. Surely Jack did't do that!!!

One Happy Bird ~ One Miffed Dog

A New Take on Goldilocks and the Three Bowls of Porridge

Feeder #1 ~ Let me try this ear of corn...it looks interesting and yummy.

Feeder #2 ~ I don’t know...this might be easier to get the corn into my beak...

Feeder #3 ~ OK..This is it. The third try is the winner.
I will definitely take one of these, and I’ll be back for more.
It tastes so good.

I want something to munch on, too, Mom.

Dog-gone-it. You've let me down, again, and I am not happy :-(
Shame on you.

Mom's Best Friend ~ Jack

Hey, Mom...Do you think I can make it across the "Bridge to Somewhere"?
I promise NOT to go out into the highway.

I'm not sure.
Think I might need to think about this a bit more because it's risky territory.

Nope! Don't think I'll do it today. It sure did hurt a while back when I got my paw caught between those old boards and had to cry for help.We really do need a new bridge, Mom...a doggie proof bridge...PLEASE!  I'm going home for a "cookie". That's lots safer and sure tastes better.

Our Jack ~ 10-15-11

Jack is our 11 year old “very challenged” dog. He cannot jump up on anything....if he gets into a narrow room, he backs out of it instead of turning around and walking out...he is continually trying to dig a hole through our floors to China and it drives us nuts...he barks at his shadow...if we let him out the front door he can run around the property and show up on the back deck, but he cannot figure out how to get off the back deck and back into the front yard...BUT...he is lovable and in a way fits perfectly into this crazy old house. He may be a “full bred” schnauzer with some funky looking papers on him, but he does not act like one and his hair looks and feels like it is coated in Crisco...so we keep him shaved back. He is definitely one unique dog.I really don’t think he would have survived with any other family. He’s lived a long and good life, and I guess he has quite a few more years to go trying to get to China.
