Double Windmill & Cross and Crown

Well, we are getting down to the end of our block-along. Only two weeks left to go and 4 blocks...2 per week.  Since I have been sticking to my stash, my whites are a real hodgepodge. I’ve been using all the bits and pieces of whites I have in the bin. This is going to be a scrappy quilt.

 Double Windmill ~ #17

Cross and Crown ~ #14

Pretty soon I am going to have to start thinking about how I am going to join the 20 blocks and what fabrics I am going to use in the piecing. Here are how they were done by the talented quilters in our book:

Completed quilt without strips between blocks and white for the borders.

This example has strips and corner blocks.

DECISIONS...DECISIONS...WHAT AM I GONNA DO???
I think I like the style of the second one the best, but I want the white borders around it. I love how each of the blocks is trimmed with a different color.

I recently bought “The Quilter’s Color Club" to help me better understand how to select colors for my blocks. Here’s the link to Amazon. It explains hue, value, temperature, intensity and the color wheel in a way that I can even understand them. Then it gives the reader exercises to complete making blocks with different color combinations for different effects.  I am really enjoying it. It’s a shame I didn’t have it before I started this project because I had no clue to color use when I was cutting out my pieces for the different blocks...and you can tell it!

More Slow Paper Piecing

I continue to work on my Vintage Block Quilt and am finally down to 6 left to do, and they seem to be the hardest. Partial seams plus paper piecing is a bit much for my to learn at 75.

And here are pictures of what I am having to do to make sense out of all the angles in these last PP’ed blocks. I color the sections with colored pencils, pin them according to the pictures in the book, and then add scraps of the fabrics I think I want to use to try to make a final decision.

DOUBLE WINDMILL
Back...this has to be the MOST confusing one for me of all the blocks...

This is the front of the paper.

The other remaining blocks are all cut and not paper pieced.
