What To Do With An Old Hot Tub

This is what we did with our old wooden hot tub from decades ago...we turned in into a goldfish pond and it works just beautifully. Every time we say we are going to pull it out and fill in that part of the deck, we think..."What would our fish do without us? and "What would we do without our fish?" The forested hill behind our house is what you are seeing on the right and on the left is the reflection of an upstairs bedroom and the roof. See the little goldfish popping up his head? He survived the winter along with the rest of his family :-) That always makes Bud and me very happy.

This is the correct orientation of the way I shot the picture. It looks like an upside down thicket of trees, the blue sky above, and what looks like some peculiar color of orange.

When I rotated the picture, then is looks like this, The trees appear more upright but the fish still look like fleeting orange. The yellow you see are the roots of one of the plants.

  1. Fun idea to do with the hot tub! How do you keep mosquitoes from breeding in it??

  2. The more stunning thing is to imagine this bucket as a bath tub filled with hot water... Turning it into a pond is such a lovely idea, and a golden mine for intriguing reflections ! Nice red goldfish...

  3. Well that's a great idea. I like the upside down version better. Maybe I'm just an abstract nut. Nicely done.

  6. brilliant idea for the old hot tub! I miss having our small pond/waterfall that my dear hubby and youngest built for our enjoyment. of course, I miss my hubby too.
I saw on MMT that you will soon be retiring. I wish you magical moments when you do.

  8. Does this freeze in winter as I noticed you say that they survived the winter? Very interesting idea as many around here have those ponds you can buy at hardware store. Looks nice and plants look healthy.

  9. Lovely reflections!
Cool idea. We have a hot tub we inherited with the house. If it was wooden this is what I'd do. :)

  10. That's a great idea and a win-win. You get a great spot to watch fish and the fish get to live in luxury :-)

  11. You built a whole world there in that unused hot tub.. Glad the fish survived the winter -- they had lots of places to hide out and probably sort of hibernate.
