Mother Nature Has Done Her Thing Again ~ March 30, 2011

When I got to work this morning, the sky was clouding over but there was still a sky to shoot. A few hours later, as the students were changing classes, I heard coming from the hall in front of my windowless room... “IT’S SNOWING!”  Being that teachers are no more mature about snow than their pupils I headed for the windows in the library, and there was that magical snow raining down from the heavens in all of its glory...big, wonderful flakes. Quickly I charged outside with the trusty Canon point and shoot, but when I looked up I could’t see the sky or the mountains. We were in what folk here in the country call a "Virginia style white-out” - no mountains and no sky - just lots of gray and lots of snow flakes. It only lasted for about an hour, but what an hour it was. I know these are different photographs from the sunrises, sunsets, and blue, cloud filled skies I usually post, but I just couldn’t resist sharing with you the beauty of the gray one I saw today with the snowflakes floating to the ground.

Ring of Gold

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

That’s My World Tuesday ~ 3-15-11

Living way out in the country and loving to drive the back roads on the weekends, it is always a surprise what we are going to see. Many of the old homes have never ending yard sales going on in their front yards while others collect old cars and other junk. The owners of this one were proud to call it the “Sanford and Sons” house and told me I was welcomed to take pictures. Sadly, I didn’t get shots of the side of an old bookmobile being used as a wall for the tool shed or all of the Tonka toy trucks out doing their imaginary work, but I did not want to be “rude” by making a nuisance of myself. I learned that the blue bunny hutch up by the front proch is now a bird house because the rabbit is dead, and the old bed out in the front is being used for what it was intended...a flower bed. A family of 5 lives in this very old home.

If you think there is a lot of stuff on the left and in front of the house, you should see what is on the right and out to the back of the property. It is an amazing collection of anything and everything you can imagine. What do you find to be the most interesting item? Click to enlarge and then click gaain to enlarge even more.

Sunday Bridges ~ 3-13-11

The Bridge to Somewhere after Muptiple Days of Rain and LOTS of Water Flowing Under It

As you all have seen from past posts of our Bridge to Somewhere, the water is usually low but running along happily at a nice pace. Well, this week was a different story. It wasn’t running; it was roaring and rushing, slamming against and over rocks carrying with it all kinds of yucky debris from upstream. It is at times like this I do not even want to drive over the thing. As you can see from the following pictures, Mother Nature was not to be messed with, for she was on a mission taking with her everything she could from in her path.

At this point is where we have our “beachhead,” our favorite hang out spot. The water was eroding more and more of our “shoreline.” Where you see the log on the left is where we have dug a fire pit so in fall and winter we can go out, cook hots dogs and hamburgers, roast marshmallows with our little Eloise, and stay toasty by the warmth from the roaring fire.

It was pretty cool seeing white caps on the water...an unusual sight.

This is not usually a ledge but rather some big rocks in the middle of the creek. Here it looks to me to be a water slide.

I saved what I think to be the best of all.....this was an amazing sight. The splashing looks like it is ice, but there was no ice or snow left at this point.

The Lexington Motel  is a bit of local color that has never changed since my husband was a child. It still has the same booths and round stools at the counter, and it’s our favorite spot to go for breakfast on Sunday mornings. Off and on during the day you will see the VA State Highway Patrol troopers’ cars sitting in the parking lot while they are inside enjoying a quick hot cup of coffee.
