Deer Season Is Here

WATCH OUT!

It is that time of the year...deer season...different restrictions on what the hunters can use during what weeks, but the end product is always the same...dead deer. So, watch out my little baby. Please don’t get caught in the crossfire. You will not be safe until December here in VA. We do not do guns at our house. We do not shoot; we do not kill. Deer season breaks my heart each year. I know it is a necessity to lower the numbers, but it just goes against my soul to kill anything. I have nothing against our hunter friends as they love their sport and live all year for deer season to come in. We are definitely the minority in this part of the county.I am just glad that we are not a part of it.

PS...Any of my hunter friends who give me deer burger or tenderloins, I give great big hugs. I love to eat it...I just do not kill it. Killing for food is one thing, but just killing for the thrill of the kill is violence.

  1. I'm glad you're not part of it, too, Genie. Killing for sport just doesn't seem right to me, either. My father was a wild boar hunter and his conscience was clear because he used every part of the animal. Not that much different from the pork chop on my dinner plate. And yet...

  2. as long as it is done safely, and as long as the meat is used for food, i have no issue with it.

  3. Oh, I do so know how you feel!! I feel the same way and every deer season breaks my heart, even though, like you I understand that some people love to hunt and the numbers do need to be held in check, but it's still so sad. We had no guns in our house and there was certainly no hunting -- even though we lived in Montana where almost every house had at least one gun and hunting was almost a way of life. Gorgeous capture and a great post for the day!

  4. It's easy for deer to into your heart rather the hunter. I don't hunt and when I fish it's catch and release.

  5. It's a dilemma. We don't even eat meat any longer. Not difficult as we never really liked it much. I still swat flies and spiders. But I feel guilty doing so and hear myself making excuses out loud :-)
I rarely bother with leather shoes, as trainers are so much more comfortable. None of this was true conviction: it just sort of happened.
But when you come up close to hunting and shooting, as you do out in Virginia and us in the UK, then it becomes painful reality.

  7. Nice post Genie. My husband will be up North next week on his yearly hunt. We only hunt for food, not the sport.

  8. I oppose hunting. period. when I worked in the natural resources department for the state I dreaded November every year. it was our job to document wrongful kills, and there were so many horrible things that hunters did to the deer - unless you witnessed what was brought in for us to record, you simply wouldn't believe it. I prefer shooting with my camera. I hope little Bambi stays safe. happy day to you Genie.

  10. I was teaching my kids about wild rabbits. The boys enjoy shooting them.

  11. I share your thoughts and feelings. I am fortunate enough to live in an area where I see deer daily and every one of them is safe from the hunter's rifle. They live on State Park land and private property. Now they do need to be wary of the resident mountain lions and the senior citizen behind the wheel of their Buick.

  12. I'm glad I don't have to shoot to eat, I'd probably starve, and I would have to become a vegetarian, which I'm not, a double standard I guess, but the good Lord did provide for us in that way. We always take care not to kill anything on the roads either.

Shooting with a camera is all I'm interested in. That is a beautiful little deer, here they used to hunt them on horseback, chasing the poor creatures until their hearts burst, what kind of person can take pleasure in that and call it sport.

  13. What a beautiful deer you photographed. I'm with you about not killing animals for the thrill. I couldn't hunt period but I don't have a problem with people hunting for food. That's no worse than buying animal meat in a supermarket but people hunting for sport drives me crazy.

  15. Genie, killing deer just for fun, it is so heartbreaking. I know how you feel. Wish deer as many as possible be safe from the hunters. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. If you feel inclined, please revisit my blog and see the post “Coexistence with deer in Nara” from the sidebar.
