Sunday Bridges ~ 2-27-11

Away With The Old~Bring on the New
My image is such a heartbreaker for me. I loved this old bridge at you enter Douthat State Park, but it is now a thing of the past. At least I got there before it was carried off to the scrap heap and was able to document it one last time.

Skywatch Friday ~ 2-25-11

After climbing 1600 feet, we sat down for a rest and a bite to eat. I took this picture while on my back gazing up through the leafless trees to the sky. I was pretending to be Georgia O’Keefe with a camera instead of an easel.

A Watery Mosaic ~ 2-21-11

The Dam at Douthat State Park

This mosaic tells a science oriented story about the dam at Douthat State Park, a story I did not know even existed until 2 weeks ago. The lake above the dam was still pretty covered in ice, but there were varying amounts of water spilling over it at all times. After we hiked around the lake, we spent at least 30 minutes there at the dam just watching, listening, and studying what we were seeing.

The water would be just a relatively quiet, small, split-up flow over the spillway, but gradually it would turn into a raging full and loud one.  It was unbelievable, and the longer we stood there watching the more we saw the sequence repeat itself. I tried to document it as best I could so be sure to start in the upper left hand corner.

This 1st shot shows the spillway far from being totally covered with water. There was a time when the flow was a far less than a slow, spaced, downward flow, but my photos do not show that. Follow the shots down and around and you will see what I am talking about...and just pretend you are hear the sound get louder and louder as the water flow increases. The 2nd one on the bottom shows the spillway fully consumed by the fast moving water and there you can see the copper glowing through the water there at ground level. The next shot is of far less water, but it gives you another look at the pool below. The last one is taken from the other side of the dam so as to give you a little more perspective. The large photo in the middle was taken at the lower level fall spillway which is absolutely beautiful and a favorite fishing hole for the children.

The end of the story is I learned much that day. I didn’t know the flow fluctuated )as it is supposed to do), and I certainly wasn’t expecting to hear the variation in the amount of roar it made. I hope my explanation made sense to you, and the series is large and clear enough for you to see what I have been relating to you. Click on the individual photos to enlarge them.

If you look closely, you will see the rock formation beneath the rose is in the shape of a heart. Thanks to my Photoshop class I was able to do this. I am taking tiny little baby steps, but I certainly am having fun doing it.

Our Rented 3~Bedroom Cabin at Douthat State Park ~ Bath/Allegheny County, VA
Douthat has many old CCC cabins for rent, but now they have built some newer ones. This particular cabin ~ actually, it is too nice to be called a “cabin” ~ was just completed about 4 months ago. It is the only 3 bedroom one in the park. There are camper sites, efficiencies, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, this 3 bedroom, and 3 lodges that each sleep around 15 people. They are all reasonably priced, and during the winter months are rented at reduced rates. Now, you see why we go so often between November and the end of March. It is the best bargain in this part of the state, and it is only 30 minutes from our house.

Sunday Bridges ~ 2-13-11 ~ Douthat State Park

This weekend my almost 40 year old son ~ my baby ~ his wife and little 5 year old Eloise, our best friend, John, and Buddy and I went out to Douthat State Park for my 72nd birthday weekend. The weather was perfect, and we hiked  ’till we dropped. Saturday we hiked 3 miles, while today we hiked 5 miles and 1600 feet UP, UP, UP. This bridge was our final back down at the lake. It is typical of all of the foot bridges at Douthat....and, yes, that is ice on the water.

Signs on the Blueridge Parkway ~ Buena Vista, VA

Weekend before last my husband and I went up on the Blue Ridge Parkway above Buena Vista, VA, the only hikers and skiers could gain access to the road. It was closed to all vehicles. The skies were magnificent and the snow was so beautiful. The only signs of life were the cross country ski tracks, Parkway truck, and the footprints of ourselves, bear, and deer. It was a fabulous afternoon. Here are just a few of the signs we passed along out way.
