Blue Jay Invasion

This is the first year we have been inundated by Blue Jays. Good Golly Miss Molly.....do these guys make bombing raids of my yard! They eat any bird seed I put out, and they appear to have scared off my lovely Gold Finches. Any ideas? They are beautiful, but they can certainly be one big pain in the neck. Here’s hoping they get tired of this spot and fly away to another. I remember one dive bombing my mother when I was a little girl in Florida, ad it was awful. Trust me,I am staying a safe distance.

  2. Blue jays can be aggressive Genie. I have a lot in my yard in the winter. I find they come less in spring and summer when I cut the birdseed feeding down. Here is an article you may find helpful.

  3. A colourful species. I never knew they where a problem!

  4. A beautiful species but you need a big cat that is keen on blue color :-).

  7. I get quite a few Blue Jays in my back yard but haven't had a problem with them dive-bombing me. I suppose they are getting protective of their nests. Hope someone has a solution for you. I'm interested in Karen's link so will check that out too. Enjoy the rest of your week Genie :) Great shots by the way!

  8. Nice shots! We only have them around if the feeders are up and that's just during the winter.

  9. My goldfinches must be bolder. They keep coming back no matter who interrupts them.

  10. They're one of my favorites. Beautiful image shares!!

  11. The jays are beauties. Not sure why but the jays in my yard are more nervous around me than the smaller birds so the jays fly off when they sense me watching and the goldfinches and chickadees fly in.

  12. Lucky you! Blue Jays are awesome....personality and all:)

  13. I like the new look of your blog...and yes, blue jays are sort of mean. I know no way of discouraging them.

  14. So lovely. At my bird feeder, the bluejays are in the minority. Perhaps it's because they lost a fledgling two years ago in my backyard. They have long memories!

  15. I haven't seen as many as usual so they must all be hanging out with you. :)
Nice shots in the branches though Genie!

  16. Where I live we have Scrub Jays, the good kind of jay.

  17. We don't have Blue Jays here, but many Magpies, which are very noisy and wake us up in the morning with loud fightings with other birds.

  18. It is wonderful to see the bird between the woods!

  19. Blue jays tried to take over my feeder for the smaller birds and my cardinals, so I taught Jack to chase them. They left - I also was on guard duty. Now my regular birds are happy and getting ready to have babies. NOW, I gotta have Jack on guard duty against this big ole crow......and me also. Great Photos Genie

  21. Good Morning, Genie!

Not sure how to solve your Blue Jay problem. Maybe put out multiple feeders to give all a chance? Two good things about these noisy guys: they're beautiful to look at and they make a pretty good security system - they yell at anything coming near your yard!

  23. They are so beautiful! Like a blue stained glass creature. But I understand your dilemma and concern!

  24. They are so pretty! It's too bad they can't co-exist with the finches.
We have scrub jays and stellar jays here. They look like blue jays, but aren't really part of the blue jay family. They also act the same, full of P&V and have a lot of character. We only see them as pairs though and I guess that keeps them from being too aggressive.

  25. As I mentioned above when I was in Hootin' Anni's Admin, they are one of my favorites and sadly, we don't get them this far south unless it's a vagrant for a short time only! Jealous I am.

Thanks for sharing your link this weekend!! Your participation is what is making The Bird D'Pot a success in my eyes!!

  28. Wonderful series of the jays. We see one occasionally, but not often.

  29. We have noticed the bluejays checking out the birdhouse with the sparrow family in it. They certainly let us know when they are in the garden.

  30. Jays are interesting and beautiful, but you might protect one of your feeders by enclosing it in a wire cage that is constructed to admit only the smaller feeder birds.
