Lexington Presbyterian Church

Lexington Presbyterian Church

The Greek Revival structure, designed by Thomas U. Walterswas completed in 1845. General Thomas J. ("Stonewall") Jackson was a member of this church from the year of his arrival in 1851 as a professor at the Virginia Military Institute until his death in 1863. Until his departure from Lexington in April of 1861, Jackson taught a Sunday School Class that was well-attended by the town's African-American population. Jackson's next return to Lexington was for burial in the Presbyterian Cemetery on 15 May 1863. The cemetery has since been renamed the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.

  6. Interesting history! It sort of speaks to the possible reality that the Civil War was about more than the freedom of the slaves...but who knows? Maybe ol' Stonewall's Sunday School class was a bit of penance for his postion as head of the Confederate army...

  8. Echo Jim's comment. Not many Greek Revival style churches in our almost southern town either. Beautiful architecture and with this one I especially admire the paint colors--those two subtle shades really emphasize the details. This place deserves to be maintained for its history.

My post is up if you want to go to Moscow. Mr. Linky was not cooperating. Summit Musings
