This One’s for You, Louis

Last weekend when I went to the Roanoke Transportation Museum to see the old steam engines toot and roll down the tracks, there was a large room which housed a wonderful collection of vintage cars. Guess that makes me “vintage” considering I am lots older than any of them. Since Louis LaVache loves his Packards and Studebakers so, I decided to photograph and post the pictures for his pleasure. I also included two pictures of cars I once had, and one I wish I’d had.  The cars were all so polished and shiny I could see all kinds of reflections on them.

I included it because it was such a great looking car.

I just had to include these two of the Desoto because after college I had one that was painted pink and purple and had four doors. I think the top was pink and the bottom purple. The back seat folded forward so you could sleep back there, and instead of having a regular automatic transmission it was a push button one. It was a chrome looking square on the left side of the steering wheel, sitting against the dashboard, and had push buttons:  top, bottom, left, and right. All I can say is...it was one cool car!

This is a 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle. We owned one that looked just like this until it was totaled by volunteer fire department truck. The bug was parked on the left just past the intersection. The driver ran the red light, hit a lady and her car that was about to go through the intersection with a green light. After smashing into her, he lost control and took out my VW. The city did not have to pay a dime because it was an emergency vehicle going to an emergency!

Hope you enjoyed your honorary post Mr. LaVache

  4. Hi Genie, Hope all is well. Is school out? Hope your time is your own for awhile now. Love the vintage cars. I had a Studebaker Lark in HS and college--lots of fond memories when I think of it. My hibiscus are blooming and it is beginning to look like "summertime" around here. Mickie :)

  6. Wow those are gorgeous. Except for the Morris (which I've never seen before), the first thing that popped into my mind in each picture was the name of a friend, relative, or neighbor who used to drive a car just like those. Cars were all more distinctive in those days! Although I don't know anyone who had one as distinctive as our DeSoto must have been. Wow!

  7. Ah! That Packard is SO classy and the yellow Volkswagen reminded me of one we owned exactly the same model but in blue.

  12. Louis is getting spoilt with such attention you shower on him. I can see you are quite a cars girl too.

When I was young, we have rich timber tyconn's children come to school in an "aeroplane" car.

  13. OUTSTANDING, Genie!
«Louis» loves it! As you wrote, he's especially fond of the Packard and the Studebaker. The "bullet nose" on the front of the Studebaker was designed by Robert Bourke, who designed the still-beautiful 1953 Studebaker Starliner.

  14. These cars had some serious CLASS - today, they all look alike with that ugly slopped back or tiny back windows. The car industry of today seriously lacks talent.
    Great Shots Genie

  17. What fun! I love old cars. The Packard is really something and my mother drove a Studebaker ... same color, but I don't think it was a land cruiser ... memories!
