Shaking Sunday Bridges ~ 12-11-11

More Photos from our Hikes
Part I
Goshen Swinging Bridge
All I can say is this bridge is old and way too high to suit me! This is the first time I have been with the family while shooting it, though I have posted shots of it from a different perspective in the past.

This is what it look likes as you start across.

It does not bother the kids at all, and Eloise loves it!

These wires are rusty and old!

You all know how I love to photograph simple and mundane gadgets, nuts, and bolts that do big jobs. I was determined to get these shots even though everyone else was walking ahead of me shaking it more and more with each step. Buddy had to lead a hike up on another mountain, so he did not get to go on this adventure.

I think this shot tells it all....yes, I was white knuckling it. Somehow I managed to pull off this shot, but my legs were trembling at the time. Gripping a swinging bridge with one hand while clicking the shutter of a Canon Rebel XSi with the other one leaves much to be desired.

 Part II
The Hike up above our House
(This is going to make you all laugh!)

To get to the gate-fence I posted for "Friday Fences," you have to cross Kerrs Creek. Since we have had so much rain lately the water is up, I didn’t have the option of walking from rock to rock to get across. They were well under water.  Here we go....

The “V” for Victory Magical Pipe Bridge

Genie Crawling across on Hands and Knees
Buddy took this lovely shot, God bless him. You see Eloise and the guys waiting for me on the other side and not coming to Mom/Baga. It was our bachelor friend who came to the rescue, but it backfired. He grabbed my right arm, and I screamed in pain...the old arthritis did not like that movement at all. It took me quite a good bit of time, but I did finally get across, and I DID IT BY MYSELF, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

When are my male children aged 39 and 46 going to get the message their mother is now 72 and CANNOT do all the things she always did in the past with a smile? This was pure torture and my legs were black and blue the next day.

This post is linked with Sunday BridgesMacro Monday, and I Heart Macro.

  1. Oh my. My bony knees would not handle crossing that as you did. Did you consider scooting across on your butt? Anyway, I did not laugh. I can appreciate your time and place in the span of years passed. I find more and more things I cannot do as I once did and it really bothers me to no end. My wife says I need to deal with it. Yeah right. I'll give her a few more years and we'll see who is dealing with it. No, the hand grasping the cable shot is the one that made me smile. Very nice! I wonder if the missing berret happened on the swinging bridge?

  3. I´m not to fond of these either. At least this one has a net on the sides so you can´t slip from it. But They are mostly very beautiful.

  4. A challenge it seems to have been indeed, thank you for your effort and these great images of it.

Please have a good Sunday you all.

  5. You are a tropper for just trying to keep up. I couldn't have gone across those ridges on the pipe on my knees. You poor thing. I don't think it's funny because it looks painful. Tell those kids to treat you better, he he.

  6. Genie! Well I have to admit that Budd's shot of you crawling did make me smile, yeah -- but the white-knuckle one made my tummy turn over thinking of how you felt. Those swinging bridges are truly more than a little frightening. Yikes!

You are really a dedicated photographer and blogger to take and share these pictures and I appreciate it! It's beautiful country there where you live.

  8. I really enjoyed looking back over your hiking adventure, Genie. The knuckles are wonderful, I'm glad you shared that one!
There is a hanging bridge a couple of hours from me which I have been to the middle of. My companion didn't want to have anything to do with it, so I didn't go clear across, but I thought it quite fun, although a little wobbly!

  9. You're brave!!! I'd be white knuckling it too. :)
    Great shots though!

  10. This is a "scream" bridge, when I was youing, my bro used to shake it when I was half way across,

now my husband and son do it.

My screaming must be very entertaining to them.

  11. I am 56, and for years I have lost my ability to stand heights and walk over stuff like that. I am not quite sure when it happened but sometimes it still surprises me that I cannot do all the stuff I did before.

  12. Hey, it was hard and it hurt, but you did it! You are still a force!
It sounds like you all had a fun day.

  13. I had a little chuckle reading your post. You are quite adventurous. My mum is 70 and she wouldn't cross the last V. Then again, I can see my children running to the middle of the first bridge and jumping up and down to make it wobble more!

  14. Oh my goodness, you do a lot to keep in shape! The photo on the V is priceless, I had a big laugh. It is such a funny post, you write with such humor and the photo's are so great. As much as you like my blog, I like yours about the wild adventures.

  15. Genie, you were right, I LOL!! I was already smiling at the white knuckles... or rather your telling the story. I'm proud of you... and I hope your sons keep pushing the envelope for you so we can see these lovely images of your area. I really like the second shot of the bridge (which despite my vertigo I would cross!) and your first macro shot of the rusty wire. I don't like (at all!) that you end up black and blue. But stay brave, Genie!

  16. Morning - I gotta say, you make me giggle. Love the back end shot. We sound a lot alike, and I would have finished on my own too. Good for you, even though you got to wear black n blue for a bit. I admire your adventuresome spirit Genie and I guess that is another reason I continue to follow "Genie's Adventures With Nature.....or whatever :) "

  17. Uggghhh...those old wires and hooks make me nervous just by the looks of it. Happy Sunday!

  18. Wonderful series!
The bridge is marvellous and the reflections are beautiful. I would be rather nervous myself on that bridge.

  19. Good for you Genie, I would not have crossed that bridge.

  21. Ah yes, we are not getting younger. It is Hubby who is having the most difficulty in my family but since he is ten years my senior it is to be expected. He finds if I just give him a hand he can sometimes make it across. Often, though, he just turns back and tells me to go on when we reach a stream crossing.

  22. You have inspired me to go look for more simple things to photograph..I love doing macros, so I will look beyond my usual nature stuff..I too have that rebel camera....

  23. what a great bridge and wonderful shots of it....but I'd never cross that...too chicken....

  24. I love the cloudy sky, look for cotton. I wish you a happy week. Greetings.

  25. Hi there - like the shots of the nuts and bolts - not all macro has to be butterflies!

Also it’s clear that some people should never be allowed to have cameras! They only take potentially embarrassing pictures with them!

  26. I would have stayed on the other side!

You are a brave woman. Sorry about all the bruises.
