The Clouds Take a Swim

Lake Robertson ~ Rockbridge County, Virginia

Three weeks ago when Eloise and the family came to help us rake leaves, hang bird feeders, and have their campout, our treat was to take a nature walk around Lake Robertson on Sunday. It wasn’t five minutes after I took these shots that I had the misfortune to step on an unground wasp nest. Before we left on the walk, our hiking pal said NOT to move if we ran into any bees...that they go to motion. We were to stand still, and they would move on. Well, when they attacked me, I forget my instructions jumping up and down, hooting and hollering like a stuck pig, and flailing my arms like a crazy woman. They went up and down my left hand and arm and onto my ear and face stinging me as they went. The last count we got was 12 stings and LOTS of swelling and misery...and the guys had to take one stinger out of my arm. I think if there is a next time, I will remain motionless and give that a try. Surely it wouldn’t be any worse than this experience was, and it might even work. Have any of you tried the plan? If so, please let me know how it worked.

  2. Oh dear, I had the same experience when I was 12, and still remember the swelling and how miserable I was for a few days. Hope you're okay now?
This is a lovely sky and reflection!

  7. Oh crap, that would not be a good situation. Everybody runs, don't they - never got chased - just knocked on wood. Glad it wasn't worse biting.
Lovely photos with cloud reflections in water - really nice Genie :)

  8. I have not heard of that advice. I am usually calm when around bees or wasps anyway. But after the first sting my, mighty tough to remain calm after that. We all appreciate the sacrifice you made in bring those wonderful pictures to us though.

  9. I'm glad you were able to capture the picture before the incident, because the picture is beautiful ... almost feels like you could dive into another world in another dimension. I love reflections.

As for your bees ... I have often stood still when one landed on me and it did move on after what seemed like a long while. I don't know if I could hold still for a swarm attacking me ... though, like you said it may work better than flailing. Hopefully there won't be a next time :)

  12. Oh my gosh Genie, I hope you are better by now...I don't think I COULD stand still...how scary.

The picture of the Lake is wonderful and the title of your post is the best ever! for this kind of picture. (I love upside down skies!)

  13. Genie, I am so sorry you ran across ground bees. Those things scare me to death. Last summer, while playing near the pool steps, my grand-daughter disturbed one and she got stung on the face and arms. It was awful. We discover at least one hole every year somewhere in the yard. They are awful!!! Your photos are gorgeous

  14. I'm sure it's much easier said than done to just stand still while they swarm. I'm not sure I'd be able to! I hope all heals properly. Your photos are just beautiful.

  15. Oh that would be very hard not to move. I have been stung multiple times by wasps, but I was moving, too.

Your mosaic looks so calm and cool. You might have been tempted to jump in after those stings.

  16. The photos are beautiful at the risk of all your bee stings. Good thing you are not allergic, that could have been tragic.

  17. Love the pretty sky reflection in the lake! Sorry about your bee stings, I have sure it hurts. My hubby has ran over them with the lawn mower, they were not happy. I hope you feel better! Have a happy week!

  19. Your photos are beautiful, but what a terrible experience! I've not heard about staying still, but it seems to make sense since noise and movement would agitate the little stingers!

  20. Oh my goodness! I have never been stung by that many bees!

    Lovely lake reflections, though.

  21. Beautiful captures. So sorry to hear about the attack of the wasps. I've not tried the standing still, but it does sound worth a shot.
