So Sad

This sweet white-winged Junko flew into our front porch glass storm door the other day and died immediately. My friend who is a birder came over a short while later and helped me to identfy it. He pulled out the feathers so I could see the white. After I took the pictures, we gave him a proper burial.

  1. We've had this happen in the summer with birds flying into our back window glass. It is very upsetting to witness a window crash death. We use a product on our window called WindowAlert. A inexpensive decal system that stops the birds from flying into windows.

  2. Oh, the poor little Junco. We had a young robin fly into a window at our house over the summer and my daughter found it. We were going to take it to the bird rescue but it died before we could and she was heartbroken :-(

  3. I hate to see birds die this way especially when there are so many other things that kill them, but it does happen. They don't always see the glass for what it is.

  5. Aw, poor thing!
At our previous residence I had to put special decals on the west-facing patio doors so that birds could see them in time to avoid flying into them. So far it hasn't been a problem here.

  7. I hate when the birds fly into my back door or kitchen window. I have had several to do it, some after a moment or two will fly away again, but others aren't as lucky.

  10. So sorry! It is sad to see the birds flying into the windows. Sometimes they make it and survive.

  11. How sad. I have learned to place something transparent to humans that clings [like a window decal] to the glass on patio doors to keep the birds informed that this is reflection and not 'air'. So far, it works, keeps them from flying into the glass.

  12. Oh, that is realy sad. They break their neck inmediately touching the glass with so much speed.

  13. Too bad!! If you're having a problem, suspend a used CD disc from the frame. It will revolve and stop birds hitting the window. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

  14. Unfortunately, this does happen from time to time. You were decent and gave him a proper burial. That was just decent.

  16. Hard to see -- we had it happen a few times too. I wish birds would learn to identify glass windows! When we lived in Pullman WA while Bill was going to school, all the big glass windows and glassed in walkways between the University buildings had black owl silhouettes taped on them to frighten songbirds away from flying into them. I guess it worked.

  18. Sad, but beautiful, even in death. Isn't it amazing how light they are? Almost nothing at all...

  19. Awww..poor little guy. Here at my place he would have been lucky to make it to the door.

I have one cat I have nick named my bird serial killer. She is an ace at catching them and then I go out and find the remains on the porch.

It breaks my heart. But, we live in the country and we have a pond. That means we have to watch out for snakes and cats love to kill snakes!

I am grateful she has not gotten one in quiet a while and I hope I didn't just jinx myself and a poor little bird with that remark.

It's all part of nature though. I grew up in the city but my husband has turned me into a country girl!

I was fending off a bobcat the other day!

Thanks for the information about the bird. At first I thought it might be a Mockingbird.

Thanks for sharing. I hope you have a lovely week!
