Friday Fences ~ 12-9-11

The Gate That Is a Fence

I know this is a gate, but it is hooked to two fence posts and works both as a fence and a gate. There is an old road bed that runs under it. Our property is to the right and our neighbor’s is to the left...and he has the key. My two sons are already on the other side and rest of us are waiting to climb up and over or tromp around the post through the briars and the brambles. Back when we heated with a wood store, we would drive our old Land Rover up this so-called "road” to cut our wood. Thank goodness we don’t do that anymore. Turning on the propane heaters in this old farmhouse is lots easier. Yes, that is a “posted" sign on the post because we do not want hunters tromping up above the houses and killing the turkey and deer. I doubt it really works. If we can climb the fencing gate, they can, too. My younger son is on the right and the older one who was visiting is on the left. Our friend and Eloise are in front. Buddy and I are bringing up the rear, and you know who has the camera :-)

As we were coming down from the walk atop our ridge, this is what we saw... Big House and Little House Mountains in the distance and the Teaford and Rexrode barns. The fencing is around the Rexrode farm.

  1. "Old Land Rover"? We have more in common than I thought. For over 21 years I had 'old Land Rovers' but no more. Won't get into why no more but I have many good memories of wonderful adventures in them. "sigh"

  5. Stunning countryside photos. Ya, I think I'd much rather have a home heated by propane than have to clean out the ash from a burning fire...but then, on second thought, there is something sweet about fireplaces. Oh are you talking 'wood stove'. Ya, that is a four letter word... W O R K!

And the views on the way home from your walk are just incredible!!

  7. Gorgeous view! I often wonder how many hunters respect those posted signs!

  8. Everyone understands the reason for this fence/gate so it serves its purpose. I was wondering if this was a Thanksgiving family ramble? Great way to visit even if not. And VA is such a beautiful state as your last two photos prove.

  9. Oh Genie -- it is beautiful where you live! I'd love to tromp around there too.

We used to heat with wood (when we owned our house in Oregon) and would cut our own too. Enjoyed it at the time but like you was also glad when we changed! (Not a thing we have to worry about here in Florida of course)

  10. On our outings I'm the one bringing up the rear... with the camera, of course, too. :-) A family that walks together, stays together. Lovely shots, Genie.
