Skywatch Friday ~ 10-20-11

A foggy morning view of the sky merging with the mountains and then the farm plopped right there in the middle of some gorgeous countryside ~ taken from where I park each morning at Rockbridge Middle School, and today it was 7:00 a.m. when I shot them. SOOC.

A Distance View

A Closer View

A Really Close View

FYI...
The school board is closing our wonderful rural school at the end of the 2013 school year and merging us with the other Rockbridge County middle school located in the city of Lexington. It is very sad, and we - the teachers, the parents, and the children are not happy campers -  we’ve lost a battle which we all fought with all we had in us these last  3 years.. The final votes were cast  just a week ago, and it is done deal. It is interesting the tthere is no money for anything these days with services being cut here, there, and everywhere, but still the county can mysteriously spend millions of dollars they really don’t have to remodel and add on to an old school in town built in the early 60’s when our could continue to function just fine.  Another wonderful piece of our area’s educational history will bite the dust. Just last year a near-by rural elementary school was closed after spending megabucks to totally remodel it just a few years earlier. It now sits empty, and we are still making the payments on it.  What is the school board and the county board of supervisors thinking? It just doesn't make any sense. I am glad I am 72, and will not be making the big, unwanted move. One more year, and I will FINALLY retire for real...that is if I actually make it that long.

  1. Love the photos, especially the third "really close view". Stunning. I think this scenery might be something I would paint, if I could paint. h-m-m-m

  3. Those are beautiful images. I thought only California did stupid things with the educational system. Hang in there.

  4. Your captures for the day are breathtakingly beautiful! And, like the others, I'm so sorry to learn of the school closure! Some of those same dumb, stupid things are being done here in Washington as well as all over the country and it is heartbreaking and discouraging. All we can do is take it one day at a time! Hope you have a good weekend!

  6. It's sad about the school. It's amazing that people can't see the value in old things and traditions.

I would love to retire to that farm. It looks so serene there...

  10. You keep going strong, but I don't understand why our 'officials' do what they do... it's beyond me!

    Beautiful farm =)

  11. Such a sweet scene.
Sad news, but it happens everywhere. We've lost our police house in the village, our shop, our post office and our doctor's office. And all in the space of ten years. Only the school and the pub left now. And the school will probably be next.

  17. sorry about the closing of your school.Where would the kids and teachers go?

Our Kindy which is next to us is closing, and the community feels very upset as they are feeders to our school.

  21. Great shots of the clear sky and the mist hanging in the low spots.

Sorry about your school. That is a shame. You are an inspiration to me. 72 and still working. I'm 56 and have an eighth grader son with autism so I'll be working until they lock me out. Fortunately, I love my job even though it is very intense.

  22. I like to see mist rising from the ground. It is mysterious, magical!

    ODD STUFF

Through the dazzling bright blue sky
    Pigeons swim and goldfish fly.
If you think that this is strange,
You should see the mountains range!

  23. Oh Genie this is sad news indeed. I am so sorry about the loss of your community's school. That really sucks. (I thought you already were mostly retired -- but it is good for the kids that you are there for them, this is traumatic for them too.)
