Daily Photo ~ 7-30-11

Does this bridge look familiar? For those of you who have not seen it
during the different seasons, it is our “Bridge to Somewhere,”
the “somewhere" being our house across the creek.

Well, my husband is about to leave to hike that part of the Long Trail though Vermont to the Canadian border that he did not hike when he did the Appalachian Trail 10 years ago. Today I carried his pack downstairs to weigh it...16.6 lbs without his sleeping pad and 17.8 lbs with it. NO tent! No passport! I carried it out to the bridge, shot these pictures and uploaded them SOOC. We leave to drive to Lynchburg, VA, Tuesday night, and he leaves on Antrak at 5:00 AM Wednesday...crunch day for him and for our government....I sure hope he does a better job of hiking than our elected officials have been doing for us. He will be gone 3 weeks. I will be posting photos from his hike as he sends them to me on his new iPhone.

Here it is... all 17.8 lbs sitting on the bridge...and he still has stuff to put in it.
He’s 5’5” and weighs only 135 lbs and still  has to put in his food
for the first 4 days, odds and ends, water, water, water, and his Crocs.
Jack to Buddy: “Dad, are you REALLY going to leave me for 3 whole weeks?
How am I going to handle Mom for all of that time? I hope she
doesn’t  forget to feed me because that has always been your job."

Buddy is definitely a Mountain Hard Wear ~ Leki man.

Before going back in the house, I just couldn’t resist shooting the pack
and his stick  sitting there underneath the tree at the edge of the creek and bridge.

"Nobody trips over mountains.  It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble.  Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain.”

  1. Oh Genie, I'm going to be watching this one closely. I've wanted to hike that trail myself. my brother-in-law, who has worked for the U.S. Forest Service for over 30 years and plans the hiking trails where he lives in Alaska, hiked it as a teenager. the entire trail! I hope Buddy has plenty of Herbal Armor and yes - water. this is going to be fun. and don't even get me started on those fools in Washington. have a fun weekend my friend.

  5. I complain (to myself) when my camera bag is too heavy, but it's nowhere near 17lbs. I hope he has a great time!!

  12. This post of yours, Genie, brings a storm of thoughts to mind. The strongest is wondering how you feel about seeing your hubby go for three weeks, especially on a hike that is more than a Sunday stroll. It was no piece of cake for us to be separated for four months while I was in Bucharest - it was our longest time apart in 28 years - but we appreciated living in times when we can use Skype and see each other through video. You know I've done more than my fair share of travel and that means lugging a lot of luggage around the globe... but oddly, although I like long walks or even long hikes through the woods, carrying a back pack has never appealed to me and other than a small camera back pack, I've never carried one. When I see backpackers with those huge sacks on their backs, I almost cringe. So while your husband's 3-week hike on the Long Trail sounds totally fascinating, I'd never be able to do it carrying 17+ pounds! Is he walking alone or with a friend/group? I'll be back to share the adventure with you... just keep smiling.

Can you add my meme to your list on the sidebar? It's called Thursday's Things in a Row. The link is:

  15. Beautifel pics! I like that bridge a lot. It gives a nice pattern. Your husbands hiking sounds very like a true adventure too me! I don't know what I should have said, if my husband came up with an idea like that.

  17. The backpack looks rather forlorn without its being on the hiker's shoulders...

    I’M FOND OF CERISE

For red my affection is great,
It’s puce and chartreuse that I hate.
    I’m fond of cerise,
    It makes a nice piece
Of clothing that looks just first-rate.

  18. Hi Genie,
Love the idyllic scene of the first image!
I admire your husband for wanting to finish something he started some 10 years earlier.
It sure sounds like a lot to carry on one's shoulders. I wish him Happy Trails there and back.
I imagine you will have the time of your life with your granddaughter. I so loved your comment on mine "Oh,for the love of Grandchildren." You are so right.

  19. Happily, the backpack is not a nature-hiding camouflage pattern in green and tan. It is instead a fine ruby, easy to spot on the long trail. Being able to be spotted is not a bad thing...

No passport? No problem, he will be far removed from the pesky TSA and customs agents!
