Sunday Bridges ~ 11-21-10 ~ Allegheny County, VA

I usually post one and at the most two photos for Sunday Bridges, but this week I did not think I could not do the old Humpback Bridge justice without doing this series. There is the old bridge with the railroad bridge beside it. I hope the shots do not take too long to load, because it is such a beautiful and special spot. Over the years it has been washed away by flooding three times, but each time rebuilt. It’s a favorite spot for sweethearts, beer drinkers, teenagers wanting to leave their names in wood, picnickers, and just folk like ourselves who just want a beautiful spot to visit and photograph.

The Burning Bush

The sky was so beautiful as the sun was rising on my way to work I pulled off the road and snapped this picture. Not until I looked at it on the computer did I see the sun coming through the tree, and I was amazed at what I’d captured.

I bought more space as instructed, was charged, and was told I would be able to post within 24 hours. Still, I CANNOT upload. IF anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate your help.

Roaring Run Iron Furnace and Water Falls

Hauling a 150 pound wet beam on your back up to top of waterfalls is harsh heavy work! A crew of 4 men has been working for 2 months, 6 days a week. When completed there will be a full walkway with protective railings up and around the falls.

This picture was taken outside the Smithsonian Museum of American History on my daddy’s last visit to VA. We pushed him into where the aging American Flag was hanging in all of it glory. My frail daddy sat erect in the wheelchair, removed his beret, and saluted his flag never saying a word. In 1993, he died at 100 years 7 months of age. He did not talk about the war, but I know he never really got over what he experienced while serving with the Army Corp of Engineers at the height of WWI. On this Memorial Day in the USA, Remembrance Day in Canada, and Remembrance Day on Sunday in The United Kingdom, please let us not forget the sacrifices our American, Canadian, British, Irish, and Scottish veterans made while serving their countries during what was known as “The Great War.”

Summit of Mount Pleasant - George Washington National Forest ~ Buena Vista, VA

Elevation - 1,427 feet   ~  Elevation Gain while Hiking - 1,350 feet 

A TRUE FORCED MARCH, BUT WELL WORTH IT!

Mount Pleasant ranks as one of Virginia’s most aptly named peaks. Few hikes, if any, offer so much for so little work. For the price of a small elevation gain, hikers can climb two of the Blue Ridge’s highest peaks on a loop trail that is, for lack of a better phrase, quite pleasant. Steep, rocky climbs along the final miles to Mount Pleasant will appease the gung-ho hiker in every crowd. Otherwise, it’s easy hiking on wide paths and old roads through thick masses of rhododendron and mountain laurel, forests of oak and ash, and small pockets of high grass open forest. Terrain: Dirt roads and forest footpaths lead through open rock formations, fields, open peaks, mountain meadows, remnant chestnut forests, steep cliffs, and along streams.
